The 'Circuit van Drenthe' at Assen was established as a permenant road course in 1954. Motorcycle races however, had been held on the public roads which would later form the start/finish straight since 1926. Assen is the only circuit to have hosted a round of the World Motorcycling Championship (the Dutch TT) every year since the inauguration of the championship in 1949, and at just under 6km, it is the longest circuit presently in use on the calender. The circuit was shortened considerably in 1984, when the section from Haarbocht to Madijk was used to bypass the nothern section of the circuit. Further changes were made for the 2002 season which saw the section from Strubben to Stekkenwal relocated to the east, and improved access to the redeveloped paddock via a tunnel beneath the circuit. Major alterations are schedule to take place for the 2006 season, with the section from Haarbocht to Strubben been bypassed.
